The first Bring Your Child to Work Day for ITS and Finance & Business Operations (FBO) staff took place at 25 Science Park Tuesday on August 18, 2015.

After enjoying breakfast with their parents and guardians, more than 40 children ages 8 to 15 enjoyed a wonderful presentation from Arnold Heiser of the Peabody Museum, and were able to get hands-on with a replica of a Tyrannosaurus Rex tooth and many other fossils and natural history exhibits.

The group then enjoyed a game of Seven-Up led by Beth Labanara of FBO before Randi McCray of ITS introduced robotic programming. This included another fantastic hands-on exercise as teams had an opportunity to “program” one of their members as a robot to stack plastic cups using codes to represent movements that could be performed. All of the teams performed admirably and were very fast to learn the concepts of both programming and debugging as a result of the activity.

Finally, the children had a lunch of pizza and salad with their parents and guardians, and received goodie bags before departing.

The organizing committee (Phil Barello, Paul DiBello, Mary-Kay Kaminski, Beth Labanara, Dana Lipnickas, and Dave Logie) would like to thank everyone that attended for their exemplary behavior and high level of participation, as well as presenters Arnold and Randi. Special thanks go to John Mayes, Associate Vice President & Chief Procurement Officer in Finance and Business Operations, for all of the support that made the event possible. We hope that this will now become an annual event on the 25 Science Park calendar.
